Research title

Landslide hazards and risk assessment using multi-aspect dInSAR data and GIS technologies in Dessie, Ethiopia.

Research summary

In my PhD research project, I use ascending and descending orbits TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X radar satellite images to study landslide in Dessie and its environs. I conduct SAR geometry analysis, attempt to combine different orbit data, and compute maximum measurable motions for landslides occurring in complex terrain in highlands of Ethiopia.

In attempt to alleviate the limitation of DInSAR/PSI in landslide monitoring applications, this research suggests a GIS model to integrate radar and non-radar or landslide related external data sources (such as GPS data, geology and geomorphology, soil moisture, landcover, air photos and optical satellite images) for the sake of multicriteria analysis.

In addition, I study the different factors responsible for the occurrence of landslide in the region. There is also special interest to quantitatively measure the slope instability phenomena in relation to the seasonal distribution of rain fall in the region. Moreover, analyzing landslide triggering factors (such as rainfall, earthquake), susceptibility mapping and risk assessment are also main focus of this work.

The area of interest, the Dessie town, is situated on small tectonic graben between Tossa fault scarp in the west and Azwa Gedel steep cliff in the east. It is one of the most typical areas of northern Ethiopia, which is frequently affected by landslides. The city is located some 400 km north of the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa (see map). This place is on south-western margin of the Afar rift which is the northern most active sector of the East African Rift System.
